I have a question about Rega or their products that is not addressed above
Q. Do you sell turntables?
A. There are a number of stores now selling Rega turntables in Melbourne. Meanwhile, I've decided to concentrate on providing repairs, restorations, and upgrades.
Q. Can you service a non-Rega turntable?
A. In addition to Rega, I offer support for any Linn turntable (1973-present).
Q. Do you sell Rega parts over the counter, or by mail?
A. I'm afraid not, but you might obtain what you need from a Rega dealer. For help finding your nearest dealer, contact Rega's local representation: Synergy Audio Visual.
Q. Do you install and optimise items obtained elsewhere?
A. No - I provide both product and labour together. This makes it easier to a) assure the quality of the final result for the customer and b) assure an adequate financial return for me.
Q. Where can I obtain service outside Victoria?
A. Rega's appointed representation in Australia is Synergy Audio Visual. They can refer you to your nearest service provider, or suggest an alternative.
Q. Can I mail you a turntable for service?
A. It could be done, but would be unjustifiably expensive. It's better if you can find someone local to you; contact Synergy Audio Visual for more advice.
Q. How do I set up a Rega arm? (RB1xx series or 2xx series)
A. These arms are a bit unusual; for a step-by-step guide, please click here.
Q. How do I set up other models of Rega tonearm? (EG one with a spring loaded tracking force dial)
A. for a step-by-step guide, please click here.
For other questions about Rega (the company) or their products...
Please contact Rega, or one of their retailers, as applicable. Alternatively, contact Rega's appointed representative in Australia: Synergy Audio Visual.
Regarding the interconnect cable on the RB1xx, RB2xx, and RB3xx series tonearms:
Since the 1980s, Rega's best selling arms have been equipped with a basic cable that has a 'spiral' screen instead of full screening. Rega have been criticised for this for circa three decades, but they point to the care (and money) applied to other areas of the product and the net effect of their various design choices on the final result - IE the sound quality of their products compared to the competition.
Despite the cheap cable, most owners experience no obvious noise at normal listening levels, and for those who do, this page includes suggestions that are almost always effective.
In some cases, upgrade of the interconnect cable may be appropriate. You would find my quote at the higher end of the price spectrum, though, due to the way in which I carry out such work.
In case of excessive buzz or hum:
If you have an RB1xx, 2xx, or 3xx series arm and are irritated by a buzz or hum, then the following tips and facts should help you resolve the issue for free:
- Position the Rega interconnect cable away from other cables (remember there is mains cabling in your wall).
- If the interconnect must be near to a mains cable then it's usually better to place it at 90 degrees (IE crossing) rather than parallel.
- Changing the position relative to other equipment will also effect noise floor (either worse or better), but take the platter off and secure the arm before you begin moving the turntable around.
- Be aware that mains transformers can 'inject' noise at a surprising distance (especially the non-torroidal types), and the interference fields are often not symmetrical.
- Certain types of lighting can cause or worsen 'buzz.' If applicable, re-position equipment or lighting.
Note: for qualified customers, who have tried the above measures, and who live local to me, I will quote for an interconnect upgrade.
No earth wire on Rega tonearms(?)
Most Rega arms are earthed through the left channel ground (IE, the 'negative' of the left RCA plug) rather than through a separate wire. Rega's approach has practical benefits, and reflects how the earthing is arranged inside most amplifiers, phono-stages, etc. However, as with everything else in audio, there is controversy on the subject of arm earthing. When I re-cable a Rega arm I do install an independent earth wire, but in most cases this particular detail makes little or no contribution to the final result, sound wise.
Q. Are you an authorised Rega dealer?
A. Yes (Rega vinyl players and related products). I
have +10 years experience with Rega turntables, and have seen almost every version. All work meets or exceeds Rega standards. I am
registered with Rega's national representative - Synergy Audio Visual - as "promusica," which is my legal
trading name in Australia. The address of this website is www.promusica.com.au
